Before and After School Daycare (BASC)

BASC operates only before and after school , as space allows, to students who attend St. Clare School and are registered in our daycare program.  Our daycare is certified with Children’s Services.  Our hours are 7:00 – 8:05 a.m. and 3:00 – 6:00 p.m. (2:05 – 6:00 p.m. on Tuesdays only) Monday through Friday.  On conference and in-service days, it will remain open all day, except during the first week of school during half-days for kindergarten and first graders.  There will be no daycare provided during the school day on those days.  Parents of children who are not picked up on time will be charged $1.00 per minute past 6:00 p.m.

Every child must be registered for daycare whether they attend regularly or on a drop-in basis.  Because of our certification, we are allowed only a certain number of children in the daycare each day.  A Medical Release form must be on file before any child can attend, and we require a permission slip from the parent if a child is to walk home from BASC at a certain point in the afternoon.  Children who are too sick to attend school are not allowed in daycare.

Our teachers make every attempt to provide a relaxing and recreational daycare.  The Kindergarten through fifth grade students are divided into one group; and sixth, seventh and eight graders into another group until approximately 5:00 p.m., when these groups merge.  We follow a regular schedule, but try to provide as much flexibility during free choice time as possible.  Therefore, some children may be in the gym, some in the library, some in the daycare, and some helping in a classroom.  Keep this in mind if the children are not in the daycare room when a parent comes to pick them up.  While this is inconvenient for the parent, we feel it is more enriching for the children who are here every day after school.

Some of the children put in a long day at school and daycare, and when they get tired, inappropriate behavior can arise.  Parents will be notified of these situations.  Basic school rules are enforced with our regular discipline policy, and we will work with the child to resolve any problems.  If an issue is not resolved after good faith efforts, or if repeated problems arise, a child may be told that daycare is not an option for him/her.

If you have not registered for daycare you will be charged both the registration fee and for services rendered.  No exceptions will be allowed.  If you don’t plan to use daycare, but have not picked up your children on time, they will be sent to BASC.  The first unscheduled use of the daycare program will result in a $5 registration fee, plus hourly rate.  If there is a second non-scheduled use of BASC, parents must pay the balance owing on registration ($30), plus hourly rate of pay.  Daycare bills each month and must be paid with a separate check from tuition.  Daycare bills are due upon receipt.^

Parties Outside of School

If there is a party outside of school hours and the whole class in not invited, we ask that it not be talked about at school so as not to offend those uninvited.  The school is not responsible for any non-school sponsored parties or events.^

Parties in School

Celebrations are arranged with individual teachers.  Treats must be purchased and not home-baked to avoid such things as hepatitis.

Privileges, parties, treats delivered to school must be for the entire class and never for just a select few.  The school strongly supports inclusion of all classmates no matter what the event may be.^

Birthdays

Birthdays are celebrated in the classroom.  Parents may send a treat, which must be store prepared.  We are not allowed to serve home-baked goods in school, and not all children are able to bring treats.  Please check with your child’s teacher before bringing any food.  Children celebrating their birthday may have free dress.^

End of the Year Party

Any special arrangements made for graduation or end-of-the-year events must include all students.  School sponsored graduation celebrations are planned by the school and will be chaperoned by school-related personnel and parents.  The school does not endorse or allow fund-raising for non-school sponsored celebrations.^

Dances

Students who wish to attend parish, CYO, or other school dances may do so, but not with St. Clare School endorsement.  In other words, no class lists will be provided.  At the principal’s discretion, Middle School activities may include a dance.  Other activities will also be provided for those who don’t wish to dance.^

Lunch Program

Each month you will receive a lunch menu calendar.  These menus will cover a two month period and lunches need to be pre-ordered for those two months.  One lunch menu calendar per each student needs to be filled out.  Mark your selections and attach your check to the white copy of the menu.  The yellow copy is for your records.  Lunch menus will have a deadline each month to be turned in.  These deadlines are firm and no exceptions will be made if a menu comes in late.  If a menu is not turned in by the deadline, your child will need to wait until the next two-month lunch menu arrives.  The reason the deadline is firm is because the tracking of this program is extensive and it causes too much work to add to the count once it has been done for that two month period.

Lunch Credits: If your student is absent on a lunch day that s/he has ordered, a refund will not be given.  If a field trip is scheduled and it is not reflected in the lunch menu, your student will receive a credit toward the next month menu.   ^

Snacks and Lunch

We break for snack before morning recess in K-5th grades, and at a mid-morning break for 6-8 graders.  Send additional food for snack time, as this should not be an early start on your child’s lunch.  Please pack healthy snacks, such as muffins, carrots and celery, crackers and cheese, etc.   We appreciate it when you pack lunches that do not include a lot of packaging.  Recycling is always a concern; keep packaging to a minimum.

We don’t allow soda pop or “Squeeze-Its” (the 100% fruit juice ones are OK) at snack or lunch, and encourage students to drink either milk or fruit juice.  We do not have the adult help to allow the children access to the microwave.  Please remember to include a spoon, knife or fork in your child’s lunch if one is needed. ^

“Forgot a Lunch” Procedure

Students who forget to bring a lunch are expected to phone home for someone to deliver a lunch to them.  The school does not have food on hand to provide lunch for every student who forgets a lunch. Please make lunch a priority in the morning to make sure your student brings it to school.  If you should forget a lunch we have designated a table down in the lunchroom for those lunches marked “Monahan Table,” located to the right of the kitchen dishwashing window.  You may now bring your child’s forgotten lunch and place it on the designated table in the cafeteria.  When your child goes down for lunch they will pick up their forgotten lunch from the table.  Please be sure to have your student’s name on it.  This procedure will help take away interruptions of both the classroom and office and it will save you time and energy from coming upstairs to drop it off.  ^

Student Council and Service Projects

Leadership is encouraged through participation in Student Council.  Student Council meets regularly to advance the spirit of the school through various activities and service outreach projects.  Service to others is a hallmark of Catholic education and our religious education program.  Each class chooses a charity or cause to serve throughout the year.  Our goal is to teach our children how to live the Beatitudes and understand the Gospel in today’s world.^

Conflict Resolution

Conflict is a natural and expected condition that flows from individual differences and held values.  Managing conflict legitimizes individual feeling and perceptions and can lead to healthy growth for all involved.  When conflict or misunderstandings arise at St. Clare, we ask that all follow the imperative of Jesus (Matthew 18:15-17).  First, speak to the person about your concern.  Secondly, if the two of you cannot reach an understanding or agreement, invite that person’s supervisor to join you.  The school staff’s supervisor is the principal, the principal’s supervisor is the pastor and the pastor’s supervisor is the Vicar for Clergy at the Archdiocese (503.233.8366).  Lastly, if there is still no resolution, the three of you can invite the next level of supervision into the discussion or refer the matter to the Department of Catholic Schools at the Archdiocese (503.233.8300).^
