BADMINTON!

Grades 3-8 are beginning the sport of badminton this week and are working on serving, underhand and overhead clears, drives, the smash and scoring.  So far we are doing well but finding out that the underhand serve can be challenging. It has been great to see some new kids shine in this great recreational sport.  Just in case you were interested, I have included a little history of badminton below for you to enjoy.

BADMINTON was invented long ago; a form of sport played in ancient Greece and Egypt. Badminton came from a child's game called battledore and shuttlecock, in which two players hit a feathered shuttlecock back and forth with tiny rackets. The game was called "POONA" in India during the 18th Century, and British Army Officers stationed there took the Indian version back to England in the 1860's. The army men introduced the game to friends, but the new sport was definitely launched there at a party given in 1873 by the Duke of Beaufort at his country place, "Badminton" in Gloucestershire. During that time, the game had no name, but it was referred to as "The Game of Badminton," and, thereupon, Badminton became its official name.

Toppleball

The younger grades have begun a new unit in an activity called Toppleball. This is a cooperative game that uses 1 cricket bat, a playground ball that is pitched, a tee with a ball on top, and the rest of the class in a giant circle. Once the playground ball is pitched, the batter hits it with the cricket bat and begins scoring points, while the outfield is retrieving the ball, passing it at least 3 times and throwing it at the tee to knock the whiffle ball off the top in order to get the player out.  It is great to see the kids working together and get excited when they finally knock the ball off.

AND NOBODY GOT HURT! The World’s Weirdest, Wackiest, True Sports Stories

During a February 1992 high school basketball game in Iowa, Waterloo West was trailing 50-49 with one second to go. Scott Ivey took the ball and threw it the length of the court. Nobody caught it…. But it bounced off teammate Sean Corbett’s head and went right in for the winning basket!
