What’s New in the Library?

We are going to continue our new program next year called the Battle of the Books.  Students from the 5th and 6th grade classes and 7th and 8th will be participating in this program.  Those interested students were given a list of books to read over the next eleven months.  Many students will get their reading started over the summer.  In order to take part in the competition they must read 10 books from the list.  We will then form teams and create trivia questions based on the books and have a friendly competition between the 5th and 6th grade teams and the 7th and 8th  grade teams. This will take place sometime next spring so there is still plenty of time to read the books and prepare for the Battle of the Books 2009!  It will be a lot of fun.  Here are the lists if you misplaced them.

Our first Book Club meeting will be on September 16th at 2:10 after school in the Library.  We will be listening to book talks and voting on our selections for this year. I will be facilitating the club once again with Natasha Forrester the Capitol Hill Youth Librarian.  Our Book Club is open for any 4th-8th  graders who are interested. This is a great opportunity for students to read and have an opportunity to discuss the books with one another.  We like to introduce the students to as many genres and different writing styles as possible and most importantly encourage students to read for enjoyment. The Book Club meets the third Tuesday of each month except for the month of December.

We are fortunate to receive EBSCO Host through OSLIS.  The EBSCO database is a valuable resource and is especially helpful once students are doing research reports in class. This database provides access to over 11,000 periodicals with the full text of articles, along with more reference books, maps, and other information resources in electronic format.  These EBSCO databases will only be available through OSLIS. (Oregon School Library Information System).  The OSLIS website address is www.oslis.k12.or.us.  Grades 4th -8th  are shown how to use this database during their Library time.

If you ever have any questions or concerns please call me or e-mail me at lmnapoli@hotmail.com.
