LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS -

At our first Lenten Soup Supper, $184 was collected for the St. Clare Parish in Waveland Mississippi destroyed by Hurricane Katrina.  Last fall, our school families contributed clothes and much needed supplies to get their school year started.  Our Outreach Advocacy Committee has been corresponding with their Financial Council Chairman to determine how else our parish may assist them.  Following is some recently gathered information:

U The eye of Hurricane Katrina hit land just a few miles from Waveland, Mississipi  totally destroying much of the town and leveling the St. Clare Church and School.

U Before Katrina, there were 800 families in the parish; now there are only about 200.

U Before Katrina, there were 174 children in their school; now there are 117

U The school is functioning in temporary Quonset hut tents.

U They have permission to rebuild the church and rectory but no decision has been reached on rebuilding the school.  They don't know how much insurance money they will get.

U Financial assistance to keep the school going until May is needed as many of the parents no longer have income and are not paying tuition.

U All of the church statues were either lost or damaged and they would like to have St. Clare statues as an icon of hope for their new church.

U Many of the parishioners are still cleaning the homes that are left and are in need of building supplies and tradesman to complete repairs.

U A new pastor was scheduled to arrive on January 21st to begin the reconstruction plans.

Some of the funds raised from our Lenten Soup Suppers may be used to provide a new St. Clare statue to the Waveland parish or make a donation to the school.  Our Outreach Advocacy Committee is also exploring the possibility of gathering a work party from all the St. Clare parishes in the US to help rebuild their church as it is most likely that insurance money may only be enough for the building materials.

Thank you for your generous support last week!  Please continue to attend Mass and Soup Suppers during this Lenten season to help build the collection for those in need in Mississippi.
