PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

We hope to see you tonight at our annual Town Hall Mtg. in our cafeteria at 7:00 p.m.  It won’t be as exciting as the Rose Bowl or the Orange Bowl, but the presentation is very important for several reasons.  Phil Ralston will announce next year’s tuition and explain our school budget to you.  Sure, you can read about a tuition and budget, but we really want our families to understand what it takes to sustain our program and keep improving it.  Increases in tuition are never good news, but in light of other increases we have no control over, and our desire to provide our teachers a competitive salary, we think you will want to be in the know.

I would like to give you a state of the school report in which I highlight what we’ve accomplished and where we’re going.  While this Town Hall Mtg. will be informational with opportunity for questions and answers, we will be planning a true Town Hall Mtg. very soon to invite your input on two very important issues: the needs of the school from your perspective, and future funding of Catholic education.

Since our parents raise over $100,000 in fundraising dollars, Amy Marconi, our PTC Chair, will give you an update on our progress thus far, with a status report on policies that effect you.

And finally, with all the recent news about the bankruptcy ruling, Fr. Tom would like to address you on its impact on St. Clare.  Again, there will be a question and answer period following his presentation.  If I haven’t sold you on coming yet, there will be coffee and snacks as well!

I would like to congratulate Kyle Hagmeier who received High Honors at the end of the first trimester.  Kyle was inadvertently left off of the list when we announced this in December.  Sorry Kyle!

WORLD BOOK ON-LINE: As of January we no longer have World Book Online.  Grolier’s Online Encyclopedia is available for students to access through the Multnomah County Library Website.  The students in grades 4-8th were shown how to use Grolier’s by a representative from Multnomah County Library at the beginning of December.  It is a great resource available for free to all students who have Multnomah County Library Cards.  Our Library Card Campaign was a great success. Thank you for your participation.  The cards should be here anytime. –Lynn Napoli, Librarian-

MATH COMPETITION:  Saturday December 3rd, St. Clare sent a seventh and an eighth grade team to the Central Catholic Math competition.  Our seventh grade team members were Sean Alvey, Ryan Benson, and Melissa Wong.  The eighth grade team included Megan Baglien, George Mistkawi, Sarah Spiller, and Sara Parker.

The competition consists of an individual knowledge/skill test and then 4 challenge group problems.  For the Group problems, pairs of students are joined by a pair from another school.  This year the number of schools attending doubled making the competition harder to win.  We had two winning groups.  George Mistkawi and Sarah Spiller won the Guess My Equation challenge for the eighth grade.  Seventh graders Sean Alvey and Ryan Benson won their Soduku challenge.

We thank all the participating students for being great representatives of St. Clare, and participating so enthusiastically on a Saturday.  None of this would have happened without the leadership of and chaperoning by Mrs. Kreitzberg on her day-off.  Our thanks to her as well!
