SHAKE UP THE FAMILY—TRY THIS!

The following is an article we should all consider worth reading.  If we turned off the TV for one week, what difference would it make in your family and your child’s life?  Next week is:

Help Celebrate TV-Turnoff Week (April 24-30)

Children spend more than 1000 hours each year watching television…more time than they spend in school or in any other activity except sleeping. These numbers are staggering on their own, but when other forms of “screen time” such as videos, video games and recreational computer use are added in, TV/screen time approaches 5-6 hours per average day.  As a result, children’s health, development and academic success are at risk.  TV/screen time has also been linked to other developmental and behavioral problems including aggression, tobacco and alcohol abuse, sleep disturbances and attention deficit disorders.  Reducing TV/screen time will allow kids to spend more time on vital health and development activities, such as being physically active, reading or being read to, interacting with others, exploring their environments and engaging in creative & imaginative play.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children use no more than 1 to 2 hours of TV, video, movie and computer games per day.  Families are encouraged to participate in TV-Turnoff Week scheduled for April 24-30, 2006.  Many families use this week as a springboard for making a permanent change in their families TV viewing habits.  During the week families can take a break from the TV and instead spend their time reading, walking, playing, cooking, and spending time together.  Look for the TV-Turnoff posters up in the school and ask your child about the information that Mrs. Napoli will be sharing with them in the library.  More information on reducing screen time is available at http://www.tvturnoff.org/.

PARENT EDUCATION NIGHT

Sometimes we are so busy we don’t take time to be inspired or enlightened on a new topic, or some aspect of parenting.  Our Learning Specialist, Colleen O’Mahony, has graciously agreed to provide information and questions on "Finding a Balance:  Current Research on the Difference Between Girls and Boys in the Classroom".  Mrs. O’Mahony always makes these presentations very practical so give yourself a break for a couple of hours and attend this Parent Education Night, sponsored by our PTC and held in our cafeteria , May 8th from 6:30-7:45 p.m.

FITNESS CHALLENGE  NEARS THE END

Amy Marconi and team have done a wonderful job of keeping our kids motivated to gain those sponsors.  The money jump has been a huge hit!  Now we want our kids to get in shape for the hour run on our playground next Friday.  It is a free dress day.  We’re counting on great weather so come on by and help out or just cheer for our kids.

We know you are definitely all “fund-razored” out, but if you would help us end the year with a huge success, we would appreciate it very much.

STANDARDIZED TEST RESULTS

As soon as we received the test results, I will compile a report to share with you.  Our goal always is to use the tests to determine our strengths and weaknesses.  This will be the first year we can compare our growth under this new norm.

ENJOY THE GREAT WEATHER  - IT’S BEEN LONG IN COMING!
