Bio on Mr. Marco Puccio

I grew up in Brooklyn NY, and attended a Quaker K-8 school and a public high school (the same one as Emmanuel Lewis and Woody Allen!) Angelique and I were married in 1998 and live in SE Portland.  As you may know, we are expecting a baby any time now, and we are both very excited.  Our lives have already become way more complicated!  We know that this is just the tip of the iceberg, but we have anticipated this for years and joyfully embrace all that parenthood promises and demands.

My spiritual life is of central importance to me, and though I am Buddhist, we attend Quaker meetings most Sundays.

I did my undergraduate work at Williams College in Massachusetts where I majored in biology.  While there, I conducted research contributing to a long-term project studying the impact of cyclical caterpillar epidemics on the development of mixed hardwood forests near Williams.

My MS in botany is from the University of Washington.  I mainly studied the genetics and evolution of fungi, which of course aren’t even plants – don’t get me started about the fact that mycologists work in botany departments!  While at the UW, I supported myself as a teaching assistant, helping in various ways with graduate and undergrad courses.  I also worked as a research assistant, contributing to several scientific papers which bear my name along with the scientists I collaborated with.  I worked on projects involving molecular biology, microbiology, ecology, classification, climate research and more.  After graduating from the UW, I taught general biology for a couple of years at Everett Community College near Seattle.

My most recent degree is a Master's in Education from Stanford, and while studying there I taught science at St. Francis High School in San Jose (some St. Clare parents attended this school, in fact).

I have also worked as an environmental educator and a naturalist for the Department of the Interior, and have also coordinated education for a distance learning college here in Portland.  Teaching at St. Clare School has been a tremendous source of joy for me - I really feel like I have found a home here.  My mission is to ensure all my students feel cared for and appreciated, to highlight the importance of a rich spiritual life, and to share my fascination with math and science.   We have some amazing kids here and it is a privilege to be their teacher and friend!
