St. Clare Art Fair, Book Fair and Open House, Thursday, May 26th 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Please come join us for our annual Art and Book Fair during our Open House on Thursday, May 26th, in the school hallways from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.  You will see exciting works of art created by your own children.  The hallways will be filled with the exceptional paintings and drawings of your students.  Mrs. Acurso looks forward to this night each year to show off the talents of your children.

Mrs. Napoli will be busy running the St. Clare Book Fair in the school library.  Come purchase new books for your children to read, and help stock up our library with new and exciting titles to help enrich your child's reading experience at school.

Each teacher has prepared for display special projects our students have produced throughout the year.  Come and experience the quality of our teaching and learning through our children’s class work and through their framed art.

There will be lots to see as you stroll through our hallways.  We encourage you to invite your friends, neighbors and any relatives who may want to learn more about St. Clare.  If you know of a recently enrolled new family, it would nice to extend a personal invitation to them to join your family on tour.

It will be an evening of true awe as you view the creations of your students.  Doors open at 6:00 p.m. and we look forward to seeing you all here on Thursday, May 26th!

ST. CLARE STUDENTS TACKLE NATIONAL SCIENCE LEAGUE TEST

I am pleased to announce the results of the National Science League Test taken this year by our 7th and 8th grade students.  Our school scored better than half of the participating schools, which is not bad considering the kids weren't coached for the test and the questions were also competing with 9th graders.  Mr. Puccio will be coaching a team of students in preparation for next year's test if there is enough interest.

The top ten scores were achieved by the following students (in descending order):  1st, Megan Baglien; 2nd, Becky Hatch; 3rd, Oliver Marsh; 4th, Sara Parker; 5th, Kate Burnham;  6th, Katey Houck; 7th, Noah Johanson;  8th, James Huddleston;  9th, George Mistkawi and tied for 10th place were Nicki Allers, Alice Erbling, Jake Coleman, and Danny Cobb.

A total of 43 students took the test and we are very proud of their accomplishments!

ST. CLARE STUDENTS

EXPERIENCE THE OPERA

It was indeed a grand night for signing!  Last Thursday, 33 middle school students volunteered to go to the final dress rehearsal for Mozart's "The Abduction from the Seraglio".  We dined overlooking the Willamette at The Old Spaghetti Factory and then on to Keller Auditorium for an evening of fun and frolic.  Who knew opera could be so humorous?  Some of us confess to a short nap during Act III but all in all the evening was a great success.  We were all especially impressed with the set.  It was a train that actually moved across the stage.  While we are all grateful for the exposure, some of us will decide later if we are life-long opera fans or not.  A special thanks to our driver/chaperones:  Mrs. Kiyokawa, Mrs. Allers, Mrs. Spiller, Mrs. Maresh, Mrs. Prange, and Mrs. Julie Zweber.

CONGRATULATIONS  TIMOTHY FOGLESONG

PORTLAND FIFTH GRADER WINS STATEWIDE CONTEST

Fifth grade student, Lauren Hatch, has captured first place in Oregon for her anti-tobacco poster, in the Tar Wars poster contest.  This honor has earned Lauren a $100 U.S. Savings Bond, and an invitation to help choose next year's poster winner.

Tar Wars is designed to discourage fourth and fifth grade students from ever using tobacco products of any kind.  Congratulations Lauren!

ALL BACKORDERED PLANTS WILL ARRIVE ON THURSDAY, MAY 26TH

If you have plants that were backordered, they will be delivered to school on Thursday, May 26th between 8:00 – 12:00 noon.  They will be ready for pick up after school on that day.  Kathleen Foesch will plan on putting them outside to the left of the front door (by the gym) and she will have your names on them.  Please be sure to pick them up after school because she will not be moving the plants inside that evening.  Thank you.

That’s all for this week.  Enjoy the rest of it!
