7th Grade Social Studies
Mid 18th-Mid 19th Century Project
You will select a topic and the person associated with that topic. On your poster (standard large size) you will make an appropriate heading. Then you will include four elements. First make an illustration of that person showing a contribution or activity associated with that individual. Next include a one-page typed first person narrative of some important contributions. Also you will create a map which relates to the activities of that person. Finally you will design an ad for some item or to encourage some action related to the person and topic. Tie the elements of you poster together with the use of border, color, cut-outs, other illustrations, etc. You will also need to include a bibliography of at least two sources. This can be stapled to the back of your poster along with the direction page.
Points
Possible
5 1) Put your #, name, and due date in a lower front corner of your poster.
5 2) Use standard size large poster board. It may be any solid color but
should not have any pre-printed designs on it.
5 3) Include a bold, neat, and appropriate heading for your poster.
5 4) Use borders and/or other pictures to tie poster theme together and to
draw the eye to your message.
10 5) Create a free-hand illustration of the person doing something
significant. You may not trace this, but you may base the
illustration on another picture. Use color and outline in pen or
color pencil. Erase pencil lines under pen. Include a caption.
Print neatly. This should be on 8 ˝” x 11” unlined paper which
you will attach to the poster.
15 6) Write a one page (two-three paragraph) first person narrative about
what this person did. Don’t try to tell his/her entire life. Instead,
focus on some important contributions that fit your theme. Use
unlined 8 ˝” x 11” white paper which you attach to your poster.
10 7) Draw or trace a relevant map associated with your person’s
life and contributions. Include a title, a key or legend, and all
appropriate labels of geographic and political places. This should be on
8˝” x 11” unlined white paper which you will attach to your poster.
10 8) Design an advertisement for an item or an activity which is related
to your person and topic. This should be on 8 ˝” x 11” paper. It may
be hand-drawn or computer generated. Include appropriate graphics or
illustrations. Show details and historic accuracy. Use color and balance
in layout.
10 9) Include a Bibliography page attached to the back of your poster. Use
proper format as explained on earlier handout. Include at least two
sources (not counting text book) and list sources in alphabetical order
by author’s last name or by title if no author is stated.
10 10) Keep overall work neat. Use a ruler to keep writing and four
elements evenly spaced. Avoid smudges and wrinkles.
10 11) Use correct grammar, spelling, and other mechanics.
5 12) Complete the top of this direction sheet and attach it to the back of
your poster. (One paper clip or staple in corner is preferred.)
