Students in grades 6, 7, and 8:

 

·        Continue to use the  6+ 1 Traits writing program that is used throughout the school

 

·        Include the writing process in their work:           

¨     Brainstorming

¨     Rough drafts

¨     Peer editing

¨     Peer proofreading

¨     Rubric scoring

 

·        Maintain writing portfolios and reflect on the writing pieces that are put in their portfolios

 

·        Participate in writing assessments three times a year

 

·        Write monthly essays that begin with a picture prompt for brainstorming and prewriting purposes

 

·        Write weekly journal-type paragraphs that are then typed utilizing computer lab time

 

·        Write timed, quick writes based on picture prompts and rubric scored for according to 6+1 Traits scoring

 

·        Complete a variety of additional writing projects (may include):

¨     Poetry: seasonal, haikus, limericks, rhyming, sonnets, 

¨     Prayers

¨     Myths/legends

¨     ABC stories

¨     Memoirs

¨     Personal narratives

¨     Descriptive paragraphs

¨     Persuasive essays

¨     Compare/contrast essays

¨     Opinion essays

¨     Marketing materials

¨     Stations of the Cross

¨     Personal Reflections

¨     Character Analysis

¨     Book reports – offered a choice between a creative option and a more traditional, typed option

 

·        Participate in the Oregon Holocaust Resource Center writing and art contest as 8th graders

 

·        Integrate several assignments and projects with art projects:

¨     Masks with myths/legends

¨     Logo design with advertising materials

¨     Artist stool with artist biography newsletter

¨     Stations of the Cross charcoals or posters with original Stations of the Cross prayers and reflections

 

·        Submit essays and other written work to a variety of contests presented as extra-curricular opportunities

 

·        Incorporate 6+1 Traits and conventions and complete a variety of writing pieces in other classes across the curriculum (may include, but not limited to):

¨     Literature short answer and essay questions

¨     Essays on social studies tests

¨     Research papers in social studies, science, and religion

¨     Reflections in math
