Oregon Trail Overnight Reflections

“It was a different place than what I imagined it would be.  It was a fun place where we got to do a lot of activities.”

“I loved having my friends there with me.”

“We got to wash clothes, see Laurel Hill, lower a ‘wagon’ downhill, pan for gold, make candles, cook on hobo stoves, and sleep on bunk beds.”

“It was fun that we got to cook our own dinner.”

“I liked the looking for fool’s gold, and especially making the bread and butter.  That tasted awesome!”

“When our class went on the Oregon Trail, my favorite part was doing all of the activities.”

“I really liked finding the fool’s gold near the river.  It made me feel like a real pioneer!  I loved the whole trip!”

“I learned that the pioneers made candles out of animal fat, and when they ran out of food they would eat the candles.”

“What I liked about the Oregon Trail trip was that we always had something to do and the food was very good.”

“I think the trip was great because of the diverse selection of activities.  We didn’t spend like one hour doing the same thing.”

“I liked the outdoor experience and seeing Laurel Hill.  I love learning about the Oregon Trail.”

“One of my favorite things to do was the Virginia Reel, a square dance.”

“The hot cocoa was tasty and field day was a blast – especially the stilt activity.  I liked everything and would want to do it again.”

“All of the student leaders were really wonderful, and I liked doing fun activities like the wagon drop, making candles, and making real bread and butter (the pioneer way)…”

“I thought that the Oregon Trail Overnight was going to be long and boring.  But I was so wrong.  The Oregon Trail Overnight rocks!!”

“I thought it was really cool how you could just shake up the bottle with the ingredients and get butter!”

“My second favorite part was steering the wagon down Laurel Hill because both of the steering ropes were too short so we dropped them and we had to steer with one rope.”

“The camp leaders had funny campfire songs.  I enjoyed the trip very much and recommend it for other classes!”

“My favorite thing about field day there was walking on the cans with string.  But the coolest part is when I got gold.”

“I liked the Oregon Trail trip because of all the activities like washing clothes, making bread and butter, making candles, and field day.”

“My favorite part was being with my friends.”

“I liked seeing how people lived in the old days.  It was fun to see how pioneers made life out of nature, built houses, and made food.”

“I loved the activities that they gave us!”

“My favorite field study was the one where you saw the log with the huge saw.”

“I’m really glad I went, and I can’t say I didn’t like an activity.  I thought it was really, really awesome!”

“I think it helped me to see things that I read about because I’m a visual person.  This was the best field trip ever!”

“What I learned at the overnight is how steep and treacherous it was to take the Barlow Road.”
